Supercharged Honda CR-Z SEMA Concept May Hint at Future Production Model Honda brought a supercharged CR-Z engine to the SEMA show last year, but this year Honda Performance Development (HPD) has returned with the full car: a supercharged Honda CR-Z concept. HPD has upgraded the supercharged CR-Z with a sport exhaust, retuned suspension, an improved braking system, and new wheels with high-performance tires. Compared to the 2012 Honda CR-Z – like the one that placed second in a sporty compact comparison test – the concept should have imrpoved acceleration, handling, and stopping abilities.

The HPD supercharged CR-Z concept makes 185 hp and 169 lb-ft of torque — only a bit less than the turbocharged and intercooled CR-Z Hybrid R concept the automaker brought to SEMA in 2011, which was rated 200 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque.
Japanese-tuner Mugen offers a supercharged Honda CR-Z in its home market. The Honda CR-Z Mugen RZ gets a power bump from 122 hp to 154 hp (torque is increased from 128 lb-ft total output to 136 lb-ft from the engine and 58 lb-ft from the electric motor). Mugen also adds an adjustable suspension and rear wing as well as larger front brake rotors with upgraded calipers and pads.
While rumors of a force-inducted Honda CR-Z have been around since the hybrid was released, the automaker hasn’t confirmed plans for a production-spec car at this point. Honda did, however, give the European 2013 CR-Z a power bump to 135 hp and 140 lb-ft of torque via updates to the VTEC system and ECU as well as a new lithium-ion battery that replaces the nickel-metal hybrid battery. A new Plus Sport (S+) button adds 10 seconds of electric boost when the battery is more than 50 percent charged. Changes to the U.S.-spec 2013 Honda CR-Z have not yet been announced.
