All COPO Camaros are specially prepared for the National Hot Rod Association’s Stock Eliminator and Super Stock race categories, and come with a solid rear axle, roll cage, twin bucket seats, Chevrolet Performance gauges, and a racing shifter. The one up for auction, however, may be the most distinctive one because it’s the last one built (number 69), the only one painted in an Inferno Orange color, and the only example built with a Turbo 400 three-speed automatic. It’s also only one of two convertibles built, and one of 20 COPO Camaros to be powered by the 327 engine and 4.0-liter supercharger. Total output is an NHRA-certified 550 hp.
Chevrolet chose to offer just 69 units as homage to the number of original “ZL-1? COPO Camaros produced in 1969. Back then, the acronym Central Office Production Order was the way buyers could special-order high-performance variants of the company’s cars. The 2012 production run was so successful that Jim Campbell, GM U.S. Vice President of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports, announced another 69 will be coming this year.
“I am also happy to announce that due to strong customer demand we will produce another run of 69 COPO Camaros for 2013. More than 3000 hand-raisers expressed interest in buying a COPO after we introduced the car at SEMA last year. We are excited to support these grassroots motorsports enthusiasts in their Stock Eliminator and Super Stock drag racing efforts,” Campbell said.
The orange number-69 COPO Camaro will head to the 2013 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction in January, with proceeds going to the American Heart Association.
